FEATURED ARTIST
July 17 - August 11, 2024 - Megan Evans
I create vibrantly colorful works on canvas that evoke emotion and inspire joy through acrylic mediums. I relish adding my own unique touch to abstract cityscapes, figurative abstracts, animals, flowers and landscapes. I draw inspiration from nature, particularly where I live in Sooke, British Columbia. My father was a gardener, so growing up I was surrounded by trees and flowers which fascinated me with their colors and textures. By age ten, I developed chronic back pain and at the seventeen, I was diagnosed with the spinal disease spondylolisthesis. At eighteen I had spinal surgery. The pain and trauma from that inspired me to use the creation of art as a tool for healing.
I believe I create joyful pieces to bring happiness to others, because I know what it feels like to be alone and in pain. As a quiet person, I feel that painting has always been a safe space to allow me to express my feelings and be as loud as I want on canvas. To me, life is fluid—ever changing. I’m not afraid to experiment or learn new techniques that enhance my work and expand my subject matter. What makes my work unique is my intention to influence healing and happiness in other people.

MEGAN EVANS INSPIRATION
My creative process begins in nature where I’m inspired by sunshine glistening on the water, unique cloud formations, a foggy cluster of trees or a vast array of wildlife. Inspiration comes also when I meditate or enjoy a quiet cup of coffee in the morning sun.
Ideas strike almost at random, and I envision images in my mind before attempting to put them on canvas. At other times ideas come because of a theme that speaks to me or perhaps a medium that I’d like to try.
When believe a piece is finished, I like to share among a network of artists for feedback and suggestions.
I find inspiration in many things, so many it’s hard to narrow it down. But if I had to pick my top three it would be: flowers, due to their vibrancy and unique patterns; animals from land and water, particularly octopuses, due to their texture and ability to change color; and trees, due to their texture and how they change throughout the seasons.
These inspirational factors are the most recurrent in my work and are reflected by my use of vibrant colors, textures and everchanging styles.
I always love to learn new things, so I take online tutorials and attend workshops. I enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for art and presently I teach advanced art to youth at Amber Academy in Sooke. I have also taught several acrylic workshops at the Sooke Arts Council studio.
