About Anna Mar

Abstract Art Inspired by Nature & Emotions

Anna’s art is strongly influenced by nature. She spends a lot of time outdoors, immersing herself in her surroundings and experiencing creation in its purest form. She looks at nature through the prism of our existence and (co)existence with nature is an integral element of her art. Her work is very organic. It shares the essence and beauty of the natural form and focuses our attention on the unnoticed to create artwork that emanates peace and tranquility.

“As an artist I immerse myself in beauty and the force of nature. My paintings explore the presence and influence of nature in our lives and unfold a path of self exploration. Painting is visual storytelling, a way of expressing myself without words. Capturing the grace of nature onto canvas deepens connections. It is also an expression of gratitude and fulfillment. Through my art, I invite everyone on an individual journey to reflect on emotions and values. I hope that my paintings will connect with the viewer, inspire, and bring inner peace.”

After leaving in 4 different countries and 7 cities around the world Anna made her home and is currently living in Sooke.

ANNA MAR INSPIRATION

Describe your creative process and how you go about starting and completing a finished piece.

I usually start my creative process from working in the sketchbook. I draw shapes or ideas for the composition, make a notes and do some color testing. Once my palette is defined I do some studies on small postcard size pieces of paper. I further develop composition and ideas before starting work on canvas. This is a quick process, I do follow my intuition and play freely with the brush, sometimes also crayons or pencil.

I often work on a whole collection of paintings or simultaneously on a few pieces. I start applying the first layer in a very intuitive way, at this stage I don't think much about a definite composition, just playing and finding connection with this new work. Then I apply more layers and start incorporating different colors. This is when creative ideas start to really evolve!

Towards the final stage of painting I often use crayons, pastels or pencil to add some intuitive marks, create patterns, shapes or emphasize/bring forward certain areas on the canvas.

Aside from the artistic side, my creative process is about observation and being patient. I sit in the studio and study my work, letting the piece speak to me. I learn not to rush while painting, I let the ideas grow in my head and on the canvas. Each painting is a journey, it starts with an idea in mind which evolves each time I put the brush onto canvas. The story unfolds, often in an unknown direction and this is the beauty of it. The creative process, the discovery and the connection you build with your art.

What are you most inspired by and how is this reflected in your work?

My time spent in nature has been a main source of inspiration in my art practice. Experiences bring emotions, which guide my hand on the canvas. Feelings are often hard to represent, yet through a self study and allowing myself to fully immerse in the process my art comes to life.

What are your artistic goals and how does your work contribute to your community?

I would like to further develop my style, learn new techniques and explore different mediums. Learning plays a big part in my creative development.

I’m trying to get to know my new community better. I hope that my art could be a source of inspiration, help to notice the beauty and find the connection to the natural world that surrounds us.
